These are not the type of tile that you'd finish your floor with, or fit together on the wall around your kitchen sink. Rather, these unique pieces are wall hangings, either as individuals or in groupings. They're colorful, lively and likely to complement virtually any room environment in your home or office.
These tiles have been my primary art focus since 2001, but in truth were many years in the making. In the Early ‘80s I began experimenting with styles and media including printmaking, papermaking, woodcuts, oils and watercolors, but I soon began training my focus on prints and etchings. My work was influenced by a residency in Munich in 1986, where I studied at the University of Maryland. In 1987, after seven years of intensive work in printmaking and etchings, I premiered "My Hands, They are Cold," an exhibition of etchings in Milwaukee.
All of these experiences eventually culminated in the popular and award-winning tiles I am crafting today. Many of the tiles showcase my own illustrations and imagery with themes ranging from Christian to Punk to Gothic to Nostalgia.
I particularly enjoy using recycled objects in my tiles. I use sewing notions, vintage clock faces, old letters, hardware, pieces of birch bark, rusted and weathered metals and glass. each piece is brougt to life on a ceramic tile ranging from 4-by-4 inches to 8-by-8.
Both the beauty and the bane of these tiles is that they are impossible to mass produce. Each piece is unique and individual and, as such, is a true collectible.
